This exact error happens to me with VMWare Workstation running on Windows 7.

It’s got an easy fix – you must run VMWare Workstation as administrator (right-click / run as administrator) to avoid this error.

Spot on, mon ami! The only addition I’d make is:

If your printer URLs contain host names instead of IP addresses, don’t forget to copy the relevant entries from /etc/hosts on the source machine into /etc/hosts on the destination.

If your tar is GNUish you can save on the ‘cd’ with the C flag.

e.g.

tar cf – sourcedir | ssh username@destination tar xfC – destdirparent

Depending on the OS and circumstances I tend to use either cpio:

sudo find /home/fred | sudo cpio -pmduV /d02/home

or rsync:

sudo rsync -vaPHx /home/fred /d02/home/

The latter will preserve hardlinks.
